Why it was recalled

In May 2026, the California Department of Public Health looked into a report of a person with elevated thallium levels and collected samples from stores in the Sacramento area. Lab tests found elevated thallium in several varieties. The recall began after FDA told the company about the results. The company says its manufacturing did not add the contaminant: kale takes up elements from the soil, and drying concentrates them.

Where it was sold

Nationwide, through the distributors KeHE and United Natural Foods (UNFI), between October and December 2025. About 25,000 bags (about 2,097 cases) are estimated to be in commerce.

Illnesses

The notice does not report confirmed illnesses.

Health information

According to the notice, high exposure to thallium can cause stomach and intestinal illness, nerve damage and hair loss. If you think you or your child were affected, contact your health care provider.
